Studio for Media Activism & Critical Thought: Winter 2017 Speakers Series

With the theme Mapping Media Activism, this series covered local, national and global media issues and practices:

On February 7, a panel of Somali Canadian activists and artists  - Hibaq Gelle, Hawa Y.Mire and Abdi Osman discussed media and identity at the intersection of being Muslim, Black and Canadian & how to encourage CBC and other broadcasters to create informed representations of Mulim Canadians.

In March, RTA almuna Maayan Ziv and Disability Studies prof Eliza Chandler held a workshop on “Mapping Safe Crip Space” in which participants discussed accessibility in all its forms in the context of Ziv’s app AccessNow.

The final event of the series, held on April 11, was a film screening and talk with Nunavut-based Arnait Productions (the only Arctic women's media production company in the world), whose film Sol won the 2016 Canadian Screen Award for Best Documentary.
